Dear Dutch people

By Sally Wyatt

Please stand on the right

when on an escalator. Your individual right

to stand wherever, does not outweigh my right

to walk left when trying to catch a train. The right

is where you stand if you need to rest. Right

is for those wanting quiet reflection. Though it is not right

with your life, if this is your moment of rest. It is not right

to stand left blocking the movement of others. It is not right

to gaze at your phone while standing left. Keep right.

Dear Dutch people, you know very well to walk right

on a busy street. On escalators, it is walk left, stand right.

As a rule, left is for movement, right

is for standing. Right?
